10 at Home Eye Safety Tips

January 4, 2021

Many people don’t think about proper eye protection when cleaning, doing yard work or cooking. However, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, about half of eye injuries happen during chores like these. For example, handling everyday household chemical cleaning products causes roughly 125,000 eye injuries each year.

The good news is, many of these incidents can be prevented with an extra safety step or two. So, to keep your eyes safe while in the home, be sure to:

  1. Use protective glasses when cutting the grass, using a saw or using a power trimmer.
  2. Power down tools when others approach you, like small children, or have them wear protective glasses too.
  3. When applying fertilizer or pesticides to your yard wear protective goggles to protect from chemicals.
  4. Protect eyes from cleaning products, like bleach, when cleaning your home.
  5. Wash your hands after using chemicals or cleaning products so you don’t touch your eyes.
  6. Wear protective eyewear when cooking hot oil or grease.
  7. Read and follow all guidelines on product instructions or equipment.
  8. Check for trip hazards, like securing rugs, proper railings and lighting.
  9. Store cleaners, tools and chemicals safely away from pets and children.
  10. Have a plan in place in case an accident happens.
